I used to think that it was only in metropolitan cities that traffic jams were as a result of population explosion combined with inadequate planning by the city council, that assumption is still valid so long as we are using near ideal conditions.
The perennial traffic jams or Go-Slow as it is commonly referred to as here has defiled every solution put to it, be it real or ornamental.
I reside in a little known place known as dutse which is somewhere on the outskirts of abuja. ideally, it should take me an average of 30 minutes to get to work but the traffic situation is really worth writing about. if you make it out of that traffic in 2 hours, then, you probably left home by 3am in the morning.
These days its an average of 3 hours to get to work and officially am expected to resume by 8am, you don't need to be a genius to figure out that i ought to leave the house by 5am to come in just in time, hence, i should be awake by 4am or 4:30am (assuming i have done every other thing the night before like; picking out what i would wear, pressing it, picking the shoes & having it polished, as well as any other thing i would need for the next day laid out). unfortunately, am a man which means i don't or rarely do such things.
Anyways, all this i cant manage or train myself to getting done but i still cant shake off the greatest mitigating factor to achieving this set goal of 4am, i just cant wake up anytime before 7am.
Yes i know, but, i've tried severally, that's just how am designed. i seem to need more sleep than the average man.
The consequence is that i get to work very late on a daily basis, we are talking of 10am -ish. i have been verbally reprimanded, which i explained my predicament as stated above. i was advised to alter my sleep pattern (like i am dumb & haven't tried that option).
i was issued a query after a few more days, to which i promptly replied and promised i was going to move closer to the office to forestall future occurrence. i guessed that worked because i wasn't bothered any more.
The truth is, i don't really plan on moving. i can't afford the rent in town, its almost 3times of what is commonly available where i presently reside. sometimes i just wonder how others are doing it. if you use you 7-month pay for house rent, how do you survive on the remaining 5-month pay annually.
Am buying myself time until the reconstruction is over, its almost a year and half since it began but there is 'light at the end of the tunnel' hopefully.
So for now, i would still be waking up by 7am and getting to work by 10am. i know am kinda cheating my fellow colleagues who would have put in 2 hours before i show up and we still get paid the same amount at the end of the month, but hey, who said life was fair. its happy hour for me so let me live it while it lasts.
